SFRP receives $1 million Forest Biomass Training Grant.
The Southern Forest Research Partnership, Inc. was one of twenty-two chosen for a fiscal year 2004 grant award from the U.S. Departments of Energy and Agriculture.
SFRP’s charge is to develop training materials and subsequently conduct training programs focusing on forest biomass growing, harvesting, transporting and processing in accordance with contemporary environmental values and rural economic development needs and opportunities. The principals for training material development are faculty and staff at Texas A & M University, the University of Georgia, and the USDA Forest Service. The principals for planning and conducting training programs are the Southern Regional Extension Forester and his partner forestry schools and colleges, and the USDA Forest Service’s Southern Region and Southern Research Station. Additionally, through this grant, SFRP’s member groups and organizations will develop a hypertext encyclopedia to be included in the Forest Encyclopedia Netework www.forestencyclopedia.net on forest biomass and incorporate the training materials into the Forestry/Range/Wildlife Web Based Learning Center at the University of Tennessee www.forestandrange.org. The targeted timeline for material development is federal fiscal year 2005. The targeted time line for planning and conducting workshops is federal fiscal years 2006 and 2007.
